Description
In Algeria, as in many countries around the world, particular attention is paid to the rational use of energy. In 1982, national authorities defined a national model of energy consumption, the broad outlines of which aim both to promote the least used energy resources and to preserve and better use energy in general.
Currently, final energy in Algeria is consumed approximately equally between the three main sectors which are industry, transport and the tertiary sector, added to households.
Consumer trends during this decade reveal a very strong upward trend. From 8,500 thousand tons of oil equivalent in 1980, final energy consumption increased to 14,000 thousand tons of oil equivalent in 1987, an increase on average of 7% per year during the cited period.
Faced with this rapid increase, the State decided in 1985 to create a National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalization of Energy Use (APRUE). Algeria is the first member state of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to have created an agency whose main mission is to control energy in all sectors of economic activity and to initiate actions rationalizing its use.
