Description
Merson type stamps are commonly used French stamps, designed by Luc-Olivier Merson, issued on December 4, 1900 and withdrawn from sale, depending on the values, during the 1920s.
Printed in letterpress and large format (rarely used at the time), they were the first two-color stamps used in France.
Printing in two passes (one pass for each color) created varieties of colors and color positions.
The format and the two colors can be explained by the high face value of the Merson which was used in conjunction with the lower values of the White type and the Mouchon type.
