Description
The date of December 20, 2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Algeria and China. The history of friendly relations between the two countries dates back to the time of the struggle waged by the Algerian people for the recovery of their sovereignty. China was the first non-Arab country to recognize the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic immediately after its creation on September 19, 1958.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on December 20, 1958, and the People's Republic of China was one of the first political supporters of Algeria in revolt against colonial occupation.
In 50 years of existence, Algerian-Chinese relations, considered an example of south-south cooperation, have experienced great progress, particularly on the economic level. Framework agreements for economic, commercial and technical cooperation have been concluded between the two Algerian and Chinese parties. The multiple meetings between Algerian and Chinese officials made it possible to establish a considerable flow of exchange in the fields of economy, trade, health, culture and higher education.
The state visits made to Algeria by former President JIANG ZEMIN in 1999 and by the current President HU JINTAO in 2004, as well as those made to Beijing by President ABDELAZIZ BOUTEFLIKA respectively in 2000, 2006 and 2008, on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, came to breathe new life into the ties between Algeria and the China, in the sense of strategic cooperative relations which meet the expectations and aspirations of the two peoples.
For the past 50 years, and despite all the hazards that may exist, Algeria and China have always treated each other in a sincere manner, helped each other as equals and enjoyed mutual support. Given the relationships forged throughout this period, China has undoubtedly become one of Algeria's main Asian partners.
